 Smart Electric Bicycle is integrated with an electric motor drive mechanism and battery, which produces power for causing or assisting propulsion. Moreover, it includes sensors & electric displays that provide additional assistance to riders required for a smooth ride. This helps in pedal-power of the rider. Globally, use and availability of e-bicycles are gaining a lot of momentum, owing to quickly rechargeable batteries, lightweight motors, and technological advancements of bicycle components. Presently, companies are diversifying their product portfolios through innovations & investments in connectivity applications such as V2X (vehicle-to-everything) that can protect & alert bicycle rider regarding risks & faults. For instance, Tome, a software-based company, collaborated with SAE Industry Technologies and nine other members to develop bicycle-to-vehicle (B2V) communication standard. Hence, rise in connectivity measures for bicycles are expected to positively drive the electric bicycle market.

Recent Development

•            October 2022: Hero Lectro, the smart electric bicycle division of Hero Cycles Ltd., has launched two new smart electric bicycle models in India: H3 and H5. The new smart electric bicycle has industry-first features for the Indian market, including a smart LED display and a high-torque 250W BLDC rear hub motor. It has a maximum speed of 25 km/h. Additionally, the IP67 lithium-ion 5.8Ah tubular battery can be fully charged in 4 hours and has a range of up to 30 km on a single charge.

•            August 2022: Pon Holdings and Porsche announce joint venture for smart electric bicycles. Porsche Smart electric bicycle Performance GmbH near Munich will develop the entire smart electric bicycle system, including the motor, battery and connectivity software. Stuttgart-based P2 eSmart electric bicycle will use this technology to create the next generation of Porsche smart electric bicycles. But the company also wants to sell the smart electric bicycles to third parties.
